Discount School Uniforms We just got our first shipment of school uniforms today!  We have all the basics for Portland schools like The Madeleine School, SEI, Holy Redeemer, City Christian, Saint Ignatius and Oregon Episcopal.  Peter pan collars, polo shirts, oxford shirts, flat front, pleated front… you get the idea.  Our uniforms are American made, built to last and about 30% cheaper than you’ll find at the other guys.  Plus, since we are a resale store, you can trade last years uniforms and play clothes for brand new uniforms.  We can also:
  • Monogram (with your schools permission, of course)
  • Take special orders
  • Give volume discounts
  • Have seams taken in, let out, shorten, lengthen…whatever is needed!

NW Kids Calendar: my essential cheat-sheet

July 2nd, 2009 by Amy. Comments Off

I’m going to let you all in a little secret that should shock nobody: I’m not a very good planner.  I’ m not very organized.  I forget…just about everything.  In fact, I can’t really think past the following day  This is all very well and good, since most of the people know me well enough and cut me some (ok a LOT) of slack.  Not so with my five year old daughter.  She holds me to a higher standard.  When she say’s “Mom, what are we doing today?”, I had better have a good answer.

NW Kids Family Resource Calendar

NW Kids Family Resource Calendar

Living in Portland, there really is NO excuse to have nothing to do on a weekend with a kid.  Keeping track of it all would be a full time job, and I already have about five full time jobs.   Luckily I have a cheat-sheet.  A really comprehensive cheet-sheat.  The NW Kids Online Calendar, put out by NW Kids magazine saves the day every time.  One of the many resources available to families with children in Portland, this is probably the one I use the most.

Seriously: do not get stuck in the house with the kids running circles around you.  There is too many amazing kid events (most of them free!) in this town for that.  Even if you can’t remember what your name is some days, check in with the cheat-sheet, and you’ll feel like you really have your act together.

I Heart Single Parents

I Heart Single Parents

Hat’s off to single parents.  Parenting is the hardest job (rewarding yes, but REALLY hard!). It is hard when you have an awesome supportive partner.  It’s a hell of a lot harder without one.  This country offers very little support to families, period.  It offers just about nothing to single-parent ones.  There all all kind of additional issues faced by single parents not getting addressed in conventional parenting magazines.  Dating, collecting delinquent child support, custody battles, “why mommy or daddy isn’t around” talks…tough stuff.

I just met a couple of the women behind Single Parent Magazine  and IHeartSingleParents.com, and I got really excited about what they are bringing to the single parent scene.  If you can make it, check out their
Single Parent Night Out because single parents, of all people,  deserve a one.

g-diapers at bella stella

June 29th, 2009 by Amy. Comments Off

I’m all for cloth diapers, and I know disposables can have their place too.  I also love that parents have other choices in diapering.  We just got a huge load of g-diapers in.  Nice!

gdiapers

gDiapers, which stands for green diapers consist of a washable, cotton outer cover and a plastic-free biodegradeable refill. They are made of breathable material just like sports clothing.  So, babies stay dry and happy and are far less likely to get diaper rash.

Flush, compost or toss.

Can’t flush?  It’s ok to toss the flushable diaper refills because they’re plastic-free.  Or garden compost the wet ones.  They’ll break down in 50-150 days.

flush, compost or toss

A totally new way to think about diapers.

Once you get the hang of it, the whole process will seem as normal as recycling your newspaper.

In the beginning, you may have an icky encounter until you get into the groove of using gDiapers.

You can also compost the wet ones or simply toss the soiled refill. It will break down in the landfill in about 90 days vs. up to 500 years for a disposable.  Not cloth, but definately an eco-friendly, plastic free diaper. solution

We also carry used cloth diapers at bella stella, so if you have some in good sahpe, by all means, bring them in.

shop local

shop local

I just want to thank everybody who came out on this drizzly day for the bella stella scavenger hunt on NE Broadway.  We had a fantastic day, met tons of new friends, and most importantly, introduced a bunch of neighbors to the shops they have right here in their own neighborhood. I can’t tell you how many times I heard people say “I didn’t know how many great shops there are on Broadway!”, “Everybody was so nice!” and even better “We were going to go to Target today, and now we don’t have to!”

We are so blessed to live in such a great city with such fantastic merchants.  Let’s keep it that way by remembering to spend our dollars locally!

Special thanks to Kitchen Kaboodle, Clogs-n-More Outlet, Goodnight RoomBroadway Floral, Manhattan Cafe, Furever Pets, Pets on Broadway, Well Suited, Plan B, Portland Music Company, Here We Go Again, Sweet Jayne, Sofa Table Chair, Broadway Books, Twisted for participating!

resale isn't just for baby anymore!

resale isn't just for baby anymore!

Well, I might not have slept in two weeks, and I might have used up every favor  anyone has ever owed to me or my extended family, but I can now announce that bella stella: BIG KIDS RESALE is officially open for business.  We were flooded on our opening day with good people and good vibes.  What a treat!  It was so great to see so many of our longtime kiddo customers so happy to be able to shop in a store made with them in mind.  No babies allowed.  OK, they are allowed , but they aren’t getting any onesies here.   They’ll have to crawk a block East for that.  (Thank you thank you thank you to Escuela Viva mamas for all your help!)

coming_soonElla Bee is five. She wants to know why she can’t find anything in my store. Something has to be done. Poof! Portland, I give you bella stella: BIG KIDS RESALE. We are re-opening the doors the our first location (2635 NE Broadway) on June 17.

What can you expect? An extension of what you have come to love about bella stella, but for children in sizes 5-14: wholesale priced new designer clothes from brands like Deux par Deux, Misha Lulu, Ivy Studio, One Kid, Me Too, 3 Pommes, Primigi and Naturino.

Rock-bottom priced resale clothes and accessories that are totally not for toddlers. Big kid art supplies, science projects, crafts, books and games. And something a little different for the school-aged set: discount school uniforms: made in America, dress code standard for Portland private schools like St. Ignatius, The Madeline School, City Christian, The Portland French school and Trinity Lutheran, at about 30% less than you’ve been paying.

Yes you can trade in your kid’s old clothes for brand spanking new uniforms. Yes, you can trade in your kid’s gently used school uniform from last year for new ones.

The Bella Stella stores are in a great location, they have an easy trade policy and they’ve got great clothes. Now that they’ve also got clothes for my middle schooler I’ll be there twice as often.

i have been a dedicated buyer and seller at bella stella for the past two years since moving here from san francisco. i was thrilled to find bella stella as i was used to buying great second hand kids clothes in s.f. bella stella has a great eye for used kids clothing and accessories which makes second hand kid shopping easy. i am grateful to have such a resource available to me as a mother of two who likes to buy stylish clothes for my kids but doesn’t want to buy them at retail prices. this way i not only save money but i also help to save the planet by buying second hand! it doesn’t get any better than that!
